“Sports teaches life skills, unity, good health”, JM Balamuruganat Global Sports Business Show 2017

Mumbai: Day 2 of India’s largest sports show, The Times of India Global Sports Business Show 2017 started with an address by Mr. J M Balamurugan, IAS, Secretary – Sports and Youth Services, Government of Punjab. In his address he paved the way to come together and accelerate the growth of sports development in India. The key, he said, is to create a sports culture.

Talking about the importance of sports, he said, “Sports teaches life skills, unity, good health and is also an equalizer in the socio-economic space of an individual.”

Laying emphasis on the growth in this segment, he said, “Given that we are a country of 1.3 billion people, there is a huge scope for sports revolution. The solution to improve is complex, multi-dimensional, multi-pronged; yet possible. The efforts need to begin at the base level, at schools. Teachers and parents need to be made aware of the importance of sports for the children. Another factor that needs emphasis is financial security for the sportsperson, we need to create gainful employment for them post retirement. The industry can be given a huge boost by corporates who can sponsor talent and IT sector who can communicate their story and achievements.”

Mr.Balamurugan has been associated in taking revolutionary steps in the State of Punjab at the community level. Working with the Panchayats and other communities, the state has opened grounds for children to play and explore their sports streak. The State has also made sports & PTE a compulsory subject in schools.

Through his participation in the show Mr. Balamurugan requested stakeholders and other policy makers to encourage sports in India and make it even more recognisable on the international platform. This exhibition spread over 6000+ square had an all-encompassing exhibitor category featuring National & international brands, focused conferences, B2B meets, allied activities, international and national buyers and hands-on workshops, which followed later in the day.
